Buttery, fruity greengage and vanilla jam

Made with flavourful Cambridge greengages, adding just enough vanilla transforms these sweet green plums into the most deliciously buttery sensation you can imagine!
Spread generously on fresh bread or toast, fill sponge cakes, drizzle on your porridge or ice cream, it's also surprisingly good with cheese and cold meat!
What's a greengage?
Greengages belong to the plum family and originated in Armenia. How they came to England isn't 100% clear but one fairly reliable source is the horticulturalist Peter Collinson (died 1760), who published his reminiscences in 1843. He wrote "I was on a visit to Sir William Gage at Hengrave, near Bury; he was then near 70; he told me that he first brought over, from France, the Grosse Reine Claude, and introduced it into England, and in compliment to him the plum was called the Green Gage; this was about the year 1725."
The Cambridge Gage is probably a seedling of the Old Green Gage, and dates from the late 19th century. It was recognised and grown commercially in the Cambridge area by jam manufacturers Chivers & Sons in the early 20th century.
